This is according to Youcef Belmehdi, Algeria’s Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, speaking at a forum in the country’s capital of Algiers.

The competition’s preliminary round began on Sunday in the categories of Quran memorization and recitation.

Named Algeria International Holy Quran Award, it is annually organized under the auspices of the country’s president.

Winners will be named and honored at a ceremony planned to be held on the occasion of the Mi’raj (Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) ascension to the heavens).

Elsewhere in his remarks at the forum, Belmehdi hailed the efforts of Algeria’s Quran activities and Quranic figures in serving the Holy Book.

He also noted that thousands of people from some 90 countries have signed up for online Quranic courses organized by Algeria, saying it shows the importance that the Algiers governments attaches to Quranic education.
